In the manufacture of adhesives and sealants, lime-based or mineral fillers such as calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) are essential components of modern formulations. They influence viscosity, improve mechanical stability, ensure uniform processing and contribute to cost optimisation.
Coated variants of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) are used as rheology modifiers in a variety of sealants, particularly in PVC plastisol formulations used in the automotive industry. Due to their easy dispersibility, high yield point and low viscosity, they greatly simplify the development of new formulations.
The products of the Calmit Group are specially tailored to the requirements of the adhesive and sealant industry – from SMP systems, PU adhesives and silicone sealants to dispersion adhesives.
Areas of application for adhesives and sealants
In dispersion and construction adhesives, calcium carbonate is used as a filler to specifically control viscosity, optimise rheological properties and improve adhesion. Dolomite products are used in particular in SMP and PU systems, where they ensure increased mechanical strength, stable edge quality and improved thermal resistance. For silicone and acrylic sealants, lime products offer advantages in terms of volume stability, process control during processing and reduction of shrinkage. In hot melt and reactive adhesive systems, calcium carbonate contributes to temperature resistance, improved flowability and consistent formulation. In addition, natural fillers enable a reduction in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), thus supporting the development of sustainable formulations with a positive environmental balance.
