Lime products make an important contribution to environmental protection and sustainable resource use. Whether for flue gas cleaning, wastewater neutralisation, waste stabilisation or contaminated soil remediation – lump lime or quicklime (CaO), hydrated lime (Ca(OH)₂) and calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) are proven solutions for municipal and industrial environmental processes.
Depending on the process (dry/semi-dry/wet) and plant requirements, finely ground hydrated lime, quicklime or limestone reduce harmful emission components such as SO₂ (sulphur dioxide), HCl (hydrochloric acid) and HF (hydrogen fluoride) to a minimum.
In industry, waste products such as wastewater and exhaust gases are treated. Acidic wastewater containing hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid or hydrofluoric acid, for example, is neutralised with lime milk and can be returned to the water cycle after purification.
The Calmit Group’s lime products meet the highest requirements for reactivity, purity and environmental compatibility – and support companies and local authorities in complying with legal requirements and implementing sustainable strategies.
Areas of application for lime in the environment
In the field of flue gas cleaning (FGD), hydrated lime is used to effectively bind pollutants such as sulphur dioxide (SO₂), hydrofluoric acid (HF) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) in exhaust gas streams. This reduces emissions to legally permissible levels and ensures clean air. In wastewater treatment, lime products are used to neutralise acidic process water, precipitate heavy metals and stabilise the pH value. Lump lime is used for soil and contaminated site remediation to bind pollutants, increase the pH value and improve the soil structure. In waste stabilisation, hydrated lime supports the hygienisation, odour binding and chemical fixation of sludge and waste. In composting and biogas plants, lime products also contribute to odour reduction, pH control and the optimisation of biological processes.
