Lime-based fillers are indispensable in the plastics industry. They improve mechanical properties, regulate viscosity and optimise rheology. They increase thermal stability and enable uniform processing in extrusion and injection moulding processes – for a uniform surface appearance. In addition, they contribute to cost optimisation without compromising quality and are compatible with a wide range of polymer types – from PE, PP and PVC to SMP and PU systems. Lime products thus enable efficient, stable and economical plastic formulations.
The lime products and fillers of the Calmit Group are specially tailored to the requirements of the plastics industry – from thermoplastics and elastomers to compounds and masterbatches.
Areas of application in plastics and polymers
Calcium carbonate plays a key role as a filler for thermoplastics, as it increases the stiffness of the materials, reduces raw material costs and enables uniform extrusion of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS). Carbonates are used for elastomers and rubber to increase abrasion resistance, improve edge stability and support vulcanisation. In compounds and masterbatches, finely ground carbonates serve as a carrier material, improving dispersibility and enabling homogeneous colour mixtures. Calcium carbonate also ensures high whiteness, excellent opacity and high gloss, making it particularly attractive for applications in packaging, films and technical parts. In addition, fillers influence melt viscosity, reduce thermal conductivity and contribute to higher energy efficiency by enabling faster cycle times during processing.
