Lime products are a key component of fibre processing, chemical process control and paper finishing. They enable efficient chemical recovery in the kraft process, stabilise the pH value in sensitive process stages and contribute to the purification and treatment of process water. In addition, calcium carbonate fillers and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) improve the optical properties of paper – such as whiteness, smoothness and opacity – and ensure uniform printability. Quicklime or quicklime (CaO), hydrated lime (Ca(OH)₂) and calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) ensure stable processes, high product quality and resource-efficient production.
The lime products and fillers of the Calmit Group are specially tailored to the requirements of the paper industry – from fibre preparation and water treatment to paper finishing.
Why lime is indispensable in the pulp and paper industry
Quicklime plays a central role in fibre processing and chemical processes, as it is used in fuel regeneration – for example, in the lime burning process of the Kraft process – and thus supports the recovery of caustic soda. Hydrated lime plays an important role in regulating the pH value in various process phases. This creates stable reaction conditions, which in turn ensures consistently high paper quality. Lime products also make a significant contribution to precipitation and purification by removing dissolved substances such as phosphates, heavy metals and organic residues from the cycle. This ensures clean production processes and reduces environmental impact. Calcium carbonate is used as an optical and functional filler in paper finishing to optimise properties such as opacity, whiteness, smoothness, printability and opacity of the final product. Hydrated lime is also used in water and wastewater treatment: it neutralises, precipitates and stabilises process water, thus contributing to environmentally friendly and legally compliant production.
